Case 2 – Rugby Rupture

Donor  – Michael Stubbs

When I went to give blood in Storrington, West Sussex I found that I couldn’t due to having a transfusion myself in 2002.  This transfusion was as a result of losing a kidney during a rugby match while playing for Ruthin Rugby Club Under 16′s.

Michael back playing rugby again after his horrific accident.

My kidney ruptured during the game after being kicked by an opponent while I was on the ground.  By 12 o clock that evening I had lost huge amounts of blood and my haemoglobin levels had dropped so low that my kidney urgently needed to be removed.  During this period I had received approximately 16 units of blood.
I would not be here if it was not for people who kindly and unselfishly give blood.  I’m sure Sara will agree with me, when I say how much it is appreciated when anyone who goes out of their way to give blood and inadvertently save lives.

As a result of not being able to give blood in June I will be cycling from Worthing in Sussex to Perpignan in the South of France, cycling over the Pyrenees en route.  I will be collecting money for the ‘Blood 4 Bella’ fund.  If you want to sponsor me please contact me through the ‘Contact’ link on the home page, or donate directly using the ‘Donate’ button.
